Mysore, officially Mysuru, is a city in the southern Indian state of Karnataka. It is located at the base of the Chamundi Hills about 146 km southwest of Bangalore and spread across an area of 152 km². Mysore is known for its palaces, including the Mysore Palace, and for the Dusshera celebrations that take place during the Dasara festival every year. It is also known for its silk sarees, sandalwood, yoga, and sweets.
Mysore has a rich history dating back to the ancient Vijayanagara Empire. The Wadiyar dynasty ruled Mysore for over five centuries, from 1399 to 1947. Under their rule, Mysore became a prominent center of art, culture, and learning. The city witnessed significant developments during the reign of Hyder Ali and Tipu Sultan in the 18th century. After the Fourth Anglo-Mysore War, Mysore came under British rule and became the capital of the princely state of Mysore. Following India's independence in 1947, Mysore became a part of the state of Karnataka.
