Rabindra Sarovar, formerly known as Dhakuria Lake, is a sprawling urban oasis in South Kolkata. This artificial lake and its surrounding green space offer a serene escape from the city bustle. It's a popular spot for morning walks, leisurely strolls, bird watching, and boating. The lake is also surrounded by several cultural institutions, including the Rabindra Sarobar Open Theatre, Kolkata Book Fair grounds, and Nandan, a hub for art and film.
Originally a marshy area, Rabindra Sarovar was developed into a lake in the early 20th century. It was initially named Dhakuria Lake after the locality. After the death of the renowned Bengali polymath, Rabindranath Tagore, in 1941, the lake was renamed in his honor. Today, Rabindra Sarovar stands as a tribute to Tagore's legacy and a testament to the city's enduring bond with nature and culture.
