History:
The area that now comprises Buxa Tiger Reserve has a rich history. The Buxa Fort, located within the reserve, dates back to the time when the region was controlled by the Koch kings, who used it to protect their territory. The British later captured the fort and used it as a prison camp, particularly during the Indian independence movement. In 1983, the area was declared a Tiger Reserve as part of Project Tiger, aiming to conserve the Bengal tiger population. Over the years, the reserve has faced challenges including habitat loss and poaching, but conservation efforts continue to protect its biodiversity and historical significance.
