History:
Senchal Lake was originally a natural lake. During the British Raj, it was expanded and converted into a reservoir in 1915 to supply water to Darjeeling town. The surrounding area was subsequently declared a wildlife sanctuary in 1930 to protect the region's biodiversity. The sanctuary, initially known as the Senchal Lake Game Sanctuary, has played a significant role in conserving the local flora and fauna, including several endangered species. Today, it remains a popular tourist destination, offering visitors a glimpse into the natural beauty and rich biodiversity of the Eastern Himalayas.
