History:
Originally the site of a Dorje Ling monastery, Observatory Hill's religious significance predates the present Mahakal Temple. The Gorkhas destroyed the monastery in the 18th century, and it was later replaced by the Mahakal Temple dedicated to Lord Shiva. The hill's name comes from a meteorological observatory that once stood there, later moved to a different location. The mix of Buddhist and Hindu elements reflects the region's diverse cultural heritage. Observatory Hill remains an important pilgrimage site and a popular tourist destination, offering a glimpse into Darjeeling's rich history and spiritual traditions.
