History:
The Himalayan Mountaineering Institute was established in 1954 after the historic first ascent of Mount Everest by Tenzing Norgay and Sir Edmund Hillary. Jawaharlal Nehru, India's first Prime Minister, envisioned the institute to honor Tenzing's achievement and promote mountaineering in India. Initially, the institute was led by Tenzing Norgay as its Director of Field Training.
