Gangotri Temple, situated in the scenic Uttarkashi district of Uttarakhand, India, is one of the four sacred Dhams of the Char Dham Yatra. Dedicated to Goddess Ganga, the temple stands on the banks of the Bhagirathi River, the source stream of the Ganges. The temple's serene ambiance, coupled with the breathtaking Himalayan views, makes it a spiritually uplifting experience for pilgrims and tourists alike. The architecture is simple yet elegant, reflecting the traditional Nagara style. Visitors can witness the daily rituals and aartis, immersing themselves in the divine atmosphere. The surrounding area offers opportunities for trekking and exploring the stunning natural beauty of the Garhwal Himalayas.
The original Gangotri Temple was built by the Gorkha General Amar Singh Thapa in the early 18th century. According to Hindu mythology, Goddess Ganga descended to earth at Gangotri after King Bhagiratha performed severe penance for centuries to liberate his ancestors from a curse. The sacred stone near the temple marks the spot where Goddess Ganga is believed to have descended. Over the years, the temple has undergone several renovations. It holds immense significance for Hindus, who believe that a visit to Gangotri and a dip in the holy waters of the Bhagirathi River cleanse them of their sins. The temple remains closed during the winter months due to heavy snowfall and is reopened in May.
