History:

Tehri Lake owes its existence to the controversial Tehri Dam project, conceived in 1961 but only completed in 2006. The dam was built on the confluence of the Bhagirathi and Bhilangana rivers, leading to the submergence of Old Tehri town and several villages. The project aimed to provide irrigation, drinking water, and hydroelectric power to the region. The displacement of local communities caused significant social and environmental debates. However, the creation of Tehri Lake has also brought new opportunities for tourism and economic development. The lake has become a symbol of both progress and the challenges of large-scale development projects in the Himalayas.
