Gandhi Sarovar gained prominence after some of Mahatma Gandhi's ashes were immersed in its waters, hence the name. Before that, it was known as Kanti Sarovar. The lake is closely associated with Hindu mythology and is believed to be the place where Lord Shiva imparted yoga knowledge to the Saptarishis (seven great sages). The devastating floods of 2013 caused significant damage in the Kedarnath region, including the area around Gandhi Sarovar. While the lake itself remained intact, the surrounding landscape underwent changes. Despite the tragedy, Gandhi Sarovar continues to hold immense religious and historical importance, attracting devotees and tourists who come to pay homage and experience the spiritual aura of the place.
