The Beatles Ashram, also known as Chaurasi Kutia, is an abandoned ashram in Rishikesh, India, where the Beatles famously stayed in 1968. Now part of Rajaji National Park, the ashram gained notoriety as the site where the Beatles composed numerous songs during their Transcendental Meditation course with Maharishi Mahesh Yogi. Visitors can explore the decaying buildings, including individual meditation huts (kutias), adorned with graffiti art and remnants of the ashram's past. The serene atmosphere, surrounded by nature, offers a unique glimpse into the Beatles' creative journey and a peaceful escape.
Built in 1962 as part of Maharishi Mahesh Yogi's ashram, Chaurasi Kutia gained international attention when the Beatles arrived in February 1968 to study Transcendental Meditation. Their visit, though cut short, proved highly productive, resulting in the creation of many songs that later appeared on the White Album and Abbey Road. After the ashram's abandonment in the 1990s, it fell into disrepair and became overgrown. It was officially reopened to the public in 2015 as part of Rajaji National Park, preserving its historical and cultural significance.
