The Tehri Dam project faced numerous challenges and controversies during its construction. Conceptualized in 1961, the actual construction began much later, facing delays due to environmental concerns and displacement of local communities. The dam was finally completed in 2006. It is the highest dam in India and one of the highest in the world. The dam's construction resulted in the creation of a large reservoir, Tehri Lake, which submerged the old Tehri town.
