The history of Surkanda Devi Temple is rooted in Hindu mythology. Legend says that Goddess Sati's (Parvati's) head fell at this spot when Lord Shiva was carrying her charred body after she immolated herself. 'Surkanda' is believed to be derived from 'Sir-Kanda', meaning 'severed head'. The temple is considered a Shakti Peetha, a sacred site where parts of Sati's body fell. The original temple is believed to have been built centuries ago, with renovations and expansions occurring over time.
