History:
The Wadia Institute of Himalayan Geology was established in June 1968 in Delhi, with the vision of understanding the geological evolution of the Himalayas. It was named after Professor D.N. Wadia, a renowned geologist known for his work on the geology of the Indian subcontinent. In 1976, the institute was relocated to Dehradun to be closer to the Himalayan region, facilitating field research and studies. Over the years, WIHG has made significant contributions to understanding Himalayan orogeny, seismicity, glaciology, and the impact of climate change on the region. It became an autonomous institute under the Department of Science and Technology, Government of India, and continues to be a leading research center for Himalayan geology.
