The New Vishwanath Temple, located within the Banaras Hindu University (BHU) campus, is a stunning replica of the original Kashi Vishwanath Temple. Built by the founder of BHU, Pandit Madan Mohan Malaviya, this temple is also known as the Birla Temple. The temple's architecture is a breathtaking display of North Indian temple style, featuring a towering shikhara (spire) that dominates the skyline. History:
The New Vishwanath Temple was built between 1931 and 1966 by Pandit Madan Mohan Malaviya, the founder of Banaras Hindu University. He envisioned a grand temple within the university campus that would be accessible to everyone, regardless of caste or creed, unlike the original Kashi Vishwanath Temple, which had restrictions at the time. The Birla family, renowned industrialists and philanthropists, significantly funded the construction, hence the temple is also known as the Birla Temple. The temple's design replicates the original Kashi Vishwanath Temple, but on a grander scale, with a taller shikhara. Since its completion, the temple has become a significant pilgrimage site and a center of spiritual learning within the university.
