History:
Anathapindika, originally named Sudatta, earned his epithet 'Anathapindika' meaning 'giver to the destitute' due to his immense charity. He was a prominent merchant from Shravasti who became a devoted disciple of Buddha. Deeply moved by Buddha's teachings, Anathapindika purchased a parkland owned by Prince Jeta and built the Jetavana monastery, a significant center for Buddhist learning and practice.
