History:

Veerapandiya Kattabomman, a Palayakarrar (chieftain) of Panchalankurichi, became a symbol of resistance against the British East India Company in the late 18th century. His refusal to submit to British authority and his defiance against excessive taxation led to a series of conflicts, culminating in his capture and execution in 1799. The original fort was destroyed by the British, but in 1974, the Government of Tamil Nadu constructed a memorial fort to honor his bravery and sacrifice. The memorial stands as a testament to his courage and serves as a reminder of the early struggles against colonial rule in India. The site is not just a monument but a place where visitors can learn about the socio-political landscape of the time and appreciate the spirit of resistance that fueled the freedom movement.
