Mukkombu, also known as Upper Anaicut, is a scenic dam and picnic spot located near Tiruchirappalli (Trichy) in Tamil Nadu, India. This popular tourist destination is built on the Cauvery River, offering breathtaking views of the water flowing through its numerous channels. Visitors can enjoy the lush green landscapes, well-maintained gardens, and the serene atmosphere. It's an ideal place for families, couples, and nature lovers seeking a relaxing getaway from the hustle and bustle of city life. The park provides ample space for children to play, and the cool breeze makes it a pleasant experience, especially during the evenings. Several food stalls are available to cater to your hunger.
The Upper Anaicut was constructed by Sir Arthur Cotton in the 19th century (1836-38) during the British colonial period. Its primary purpose was to prevent the diversion of the entire Cauvery River flow into the Coleroon River, thus ensuring irrigation for the Tanjore delta region. By building this dam, the Cauvery River was split into two – Cauvery and Kollidam (Coleroon). The dam stands as a testament to the engineering skills of that era. Over the years, Mukkombu has not only served its initial purpose of irrigation but has also evolved into a favored recreational spot for locals and tourists alike. While it underwent some damage due to floods in recent years, restoration efforts have been undertaken to preserve its historical and recreational value.
