Nachiyar Kovil, also known as Thirunarayur Nambi Temple, is a revered Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Vishnu and his consort, Goddess Lakshmi (Nachiyar). Located near Kumbakonam in Thanjavur district, it's famous for its unique idol of Lord Vishnu where Goddess Lakshmi is given prominence. The temple complex showcases classic Dravidian architecture with towering gopurams (gateway towers), intricate carvings, and spacious courtyards. The main deity, Srinivasa Perumal (Vishnu), is worshipped alongside Nachiyar (Lakshmi), who is considered the primary deity here. The temple is one of the 108 Divya Desams, holy abodes of Vishnu revered by the Alvars, poet-saints of South India. History:
The temple's history dates back to the Chola period, with significant contributions from the Pandya and Vijayanagara dynasties. Legend says that Goddess Lakshmi appeared to King Nambi Raja, who was childless, and promised to be born as his daughter. She laid down the condition that she should be given more prominence than Lord Vishnu in the temple. Hence, the temple is known as Nachiyar Kovil, giving importance to the Goddess. The idol of Lord Vishnu here is unique as Lakshmi is seated on his right thigh, a rare depiction. Inscriptions within the temple walls chronicle the donations, expansions, and renovations undertaken by various rulers over centuries. The temple's architecture and sculptures reflect the artistic styles prevalent during these periods, showcasing the rich cultural heritage of the region.
