History:

Established in 1977, Vettangudi Bird Sanctuary was created to protect the rich avian biodiversity of the region. The area had traditionally served as an important breeding ground for several bird species, but increasing human activity and habitat degradation threatened their survival. Recognizing the ecological significance of the area, the Tamil Nadu Forest Department took steps to declare it a protected area. Over the years, the sanctuary has played a crucial role in conserving bird populations and raising awareness about the importance of wetland ecosystems. Continuous efforts are being made to improve the habitat and provide a safe haven for the birds, ensuring that future generations can enjoy this natural wonder.
