History:
Yercaud's history is relatively recent compared to other hill stations in India. The area was largely unexplored until the early 19th century when the British discovered its potential as a summer retreat. The name 'Yercaud' is derived from the Tamil words 'Yeri-Kadu', meaning 'Lake Forest'. David Cockburn, the then Collector of Salem, is credited with developing Yercaud into a plantation area, introducing coffee, fruit orchards, and other crops. The British established schools and infrastructure, transforming the region into a pleasant and productive hill station. Post-independence, Yercaud continued to develop as a popular tourist destination, retaining its natural charm and attracting visitors seeking respite from the plains.
