The scenic beauty of the lake, combined with the cool climate of Ooty, makes it a perfect spot for a relaxing getaway.
Ooty Lake was artificially created by John Sullivan, the founder of Ooty, in 1824. He dammed the mountain streams flowing down Ooty valley to create the lake. Initially, the lake covered an area of about 90 acres, but due to silting and encroachments, the present size has reduced to 65 acres. The lake was primarily used for fishing and as a source of water for the town. Over time, it has evolved into a major tourist attraction, with the introduction of boating facilities and other recreational activities. The Toda tribe, the original inhabitants of the Nilgiris, have a strong connection with the lake and its surroundings.
