The Government Rose Garden, also known as the Centenary Rose Park or Ooty Rose Garden, is one of the largest rose gardens in India. Located on the slopes of Elk Hill in Vijayanagaram of Ooty town, it is a popular tourist attraction. The garden is spread over 4 hectares and houses a collection of over 20,000 varieties of roses. The garden is laid out in terraces with rose plants of different colors and varieties. The garden also has a nursery where rose plants are grown and sold. The garden is maintained by the Tamil Nadu Horticulture Department.
The Government Rose Garden was established in 1995 to commemorate the centenary of the Ooty Flower Show. The garden was designed by the renowned landscape architect, Dr. M.S. Viraraghavan. The garden was initially spread over 10 acres and housed over 2,000 varieties of roses. Over the years, the garden has been expanded to its current size of 4 hectares and houses over 20,000 varieties of roses. The garden has won several awards, including the Garden of Excellence Award from the World Federation of Rose Societies in 2006.
