Guna Caves, also known as Devil's Kitchen, are a series of deep, narrow gorges located amidst the lush green forests of Kodaikanal. These mysterious caves, formed by natural rock formations, offer a thrilling experience for adventure enthusiasts. Sunlight barely penetrates the depths, creating a mystical ambiance. The uneven terrain and slippery rocks add to the challenge, making it a popular spot for trekking and exploring. The surrounding pine trees and breathtaking views of the valley add to the scenic beauty. However, due to safety concerns, entry into the deeper sections of the caves is restricted.
Originally known as Devil's Kitchen, the caves gained popularity after being featured in the Tamil film 'Guna' in 1991. Before the film, they were a lesser-known attraction, primarily explored by local tribes. The film's depiction of the caves as a mysterious and intriguing location significantly boosted their fame, leading to a surge in tourism. Following the film's release, the caves were officially renamed Guna Caves. However, the original name, Devil's Kitchen, still persists in common usage. Increased tourist activity led to safety concerns, resulting in restrictions on access to the deeper parts of the caves to prevent accidents.
