History:
Established in 1855, the Madras Zoo, as it was then known, was one of the first zoos in India. Initially located within the Madras Museum, it was later moved to the People's Park near Chennai Central Station. Due to increasing congestion and limited space, the zoo was relocated to its current sprawling location in Vandalur in 1985. Renamed in honor of former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C.N. Annadurai, the Arignar Anna Zoological Park has since evolved into a modern zoological park, focusing on conservation, education, and research. The zoo plays a vital role in breeding endangered species and promoting awareness about wildlife conservation among the public. The park continues to expand its collection and improve its facilities, making it a leading zoological institution in India.
