Description:

Lake Badi, also known as Badi Talab, is an artificial lake situated about 12 km west of Udaipur, Rajasthan, India. It is a popular spot for picnics and enjoying sunsets. The lake offers serene views, surrounded by hills and lush greenery, making it a peaceful escape from the city's hustle. Visitors can enjoy boating and explore the small islands within the lake. The lake's tranquil atmosphere and scenic beauty attract both locals and tourists. It's an ideal location for birdwatching and photography enthusiasts. While less famous than Udaipur's other lakes, Lake Badi offers a more off-the-beaten-path experience.

History:

Lake Badi was constructed by Maharana Raj Singh I in the late 17th century to alleviate a famine by providing employment and irrigation. The dam built to create the lake is an impressive feat of engineering for its time. Originally named Jiyan Sagar after the Rana's mother, it later became known as Badi Talab, meaning 'Big Pond'. While initially intended for irrigation, the lake now serves primarily as a recreational area and a source of drinking water for some surrounding villages. Its historical significance combined with its natural beauty makes it a worthwhile destination.
