History:
Simlipal's history is intertwined with the tribal communities that have inhabited the region for centuries. The name 'Simlipal' is derived from 'Simul' (silk cotton) trees abundant in the area. The region was once a hunting ground for the Mayurbhanj royal family. Recognizing the ecological significance of the area, it was declared a wildlife sanctuary in 1956. In 1973, it was designated as a tiger reserve under Project Tiger, a national initiative for tiger conservation.
