Duduma Waterfall, also known as Matsyakunda, is a majestic waterfall located in Koraput, Odisha, India. History:
The history of Duduma Waterfall is intertwined with the local tribal communities who have revered the falls for generations. The Gadaba and Bonda tribes, indigenous to the region, consider the falls sacred and integral to their cultural identity. The name 'Matsyakunda' refers to the presence of fish ('Matsya' in Sanskrit) in the kund (pool) formed by the waterfall. In the mid-20th century, the falls became significant for a different reason. Recognizing its potential for hydroelectric power generation, the Andhra Pradesh government (before the state's bifurcation) collaborated to build a dam and power plant. This project, completed in 1955, harnesses the water from the falls to generate electricity, benefiting both Odisha and Andhra Pradesh. While the project has brought development to the region, it has also raised concerns about the impact on the local ecosystem and the displacement of tribal communities.
