Visapur Fort, also known as Visapoor Fort, is a popular hill fort near Lonavala, Maharashtra. Perched at a height of 1084 meters (3556 feet) above sea level, it offers panoramic views of the surrounding lush green landscapes, including the Lohagad Fort. The fort is a testament to Maratha and Peshwa architectural styles, featuring remnants of old structures, caves, water cisterns, and a decorated arch. Visapur Fort is a favorite destination for trekking enthusiasts and history buffs, offering a moderate-level trek with rewarding views. The fort is particularly enchanting during the monsoon season when the surroundings are at their greenest and waterfalls cascade down the hillsides. It's a great spot for photography and enjoying the natural beauty of the Western Ghats.
Visapur Fort shares a rich history intertwined with its twin fort, Lohagad. Built by Balaji Vishwanath, the first Peshwa of the Maratha Empire, in the 18th century (around 1713-1720), Visapur was intended as a supporting fort to Lohagad. Its strategic location allowed the Marathas to keep a watchful eye on the surrounding region. The fort briefly fell into the hands of the British in 1818 during the Third Anglo-Maratha War, after which they heavily damaged it to prevent its future use by the Marathas. Despite the damage, remnants of its past glory can still be witnessed, offering a glimpse into the Maratha empire's military strategies and architectural prowess.
