History:
Matheran, including Monkey Point, was developed as a hill station by the British in the 19th century to escape the summer heat of Mumbai (then Bombay). Hugh Poyntz Malet, the then district collector of Thane, is credited with its discovery in 1850. Lord Elphinstone, the Governor of Bombay, laid the foundation for the development of Matheran as a popular resort. Monkey Point, like other viewpoints in Matheran, became a frequented spot for British officers and their families to enjoy the natural beauty and tranquility. Over time, it has evolved into a major tourist attraction, drawing visitors from all over India and beyond.
