History:
Vishalgad Fort's history is deeply intertwined with the Maratha Empire. Originally built by the Shilahara dynasty, it later fell into the hands of the Yadavas of Devagiri before being captured by the Bahmani Sultanate. In the 17th century, Shivaji Maharaj recognized its strategic importance and seized it, renaming it Vishalgad (meaning 'grand fort'). The fort played a crucial role in the escape of Shivaji Maharaj from Panhala Fort in 1660. Baji Prabhu Deshpande and his brave soldiers defended the Ghodkhind pass (later renamed Pawankhind) near Vishalgad, sacrificing their lives to delay the pursuing Adilshahi army and ensure Shivaji's safe passage to Vishalgad. The fort subsequently remained under Maratha control until the British East India Company captured it in 1818.
