History:

The history of Omkareshwar Temple is intertwined with Hindu mythology. Legend says that King Mandhata of the Ikshvaku dynasty worshipped Lord Shiva here and attained salvation. The island is believed to have been formed due to his intense devotion. Another legend narrates that Vindhya Parvat worshipped Shiva to become taller than Mount Meru. Pleased with his devotion, Shiva granted his wish but advised him not to obstruct the sun and moon's path. Since Vindhya kept growing, Gods requested Agastya Rishi to stop him. Agastya tricked Vindhya into bowing down to him and never allowed him to rise again. The temple has been renovated and expanded over centuries by various rulers and devotees.
