History:
Lamayuru Monastery, the focal point of the village, was founded in the 11th century by the renowned translator Lotsawa Rinchen Zangpo. Legend says that the area was once a lake which was miraculously drained by the Buddhist scholar Naropa, paving the way for the monastery's construction. Lamayuru played a significant role in the spread of Buddhism in Ladakh and has witnessed the rise and fall of various kingdoms.
