History:
Lamayuru Monastery, believed to have been founded in the 11th century by the renowned translator Lotsawa Rinchen Zangpo, has a rich and layered history. Originally a Bon monastery, it later converted to Buddhism. The monastery has witnessed various historical events, including invasions and reconstructions. It belongs to the Drikung Kagyu school of Tibetan Buddhism and has played a significant role in the spread of Buddhism in Ladakh. The monastery's library once housed a vast collection of ancient texts, some of which are still preserved. Its unique architecture and location have made it an important pilgrimage site for centuries.
