History:
Originally the Vadakkekara Palace, the structure was rebuilt in its present form by Shakthan Thampuran (Rama Varma IX), the Maharaja of Cochin, in the late 18th century. Shakthan Thampuran is credited with transforming Thrissur into a major commercial and cultural hub. The palace served as his residence and administrative center. After his death, the palace was neglected for a period before being restored and converted into a museum in 1974. The palace stands as a testament to his vision and the architectural prowess of the time, blending traditional Kerala styles with Dutch influences, reflecting the historical trade relationships the region enjoyed.
