History:

Periyar Lake was created in 1895 with the construction of the Mullaperiyar Dam across the Periyar River by the British administration. The primary purpose of the dam was to divert water to the arid regions of Madurai in Tamil Nadu for irrigation. The resulting reservoir submerged a significant area of forest, creating the artificial lake we see today. The area around the lake was declared the Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary in 1934, further enhancing its ecological significance and transforming it into a protected haven for diverse species.
