Mangalavanam Bird Sanctuary, often called 'the green lung of Kochi', is a small but ecologically significant protected area right in the heart of the city. This sanctuary is a haven for a variety of migratory and resident birds, making it a must-visit for birdwatchers and nature enthusiasts. Spread across a mere 2.74 hectares, it's surprisingly rich in biodiversity, housing various species of mangroves, plants, and insects, besides the avian population. The sanctuary offers a tranquil escape from the urban hustle, providing a serene environment for observing nature. Visitors can explore the sanctuary via designated trails, offering opportunities to spot different bird species in their natural habitat. It's a great place for photography and learning about urban ecology.
Mangalavanam's history is intertwined with the urban development of Kochi. Once a larger mangrove ecosystem, it gradually shrunk due to urbanization. Recognizing its ecological importance, it was declared a protected area in 2004. The sanctuary is located behind the Kerala High Court. Before being declared a bird sanctuary, the area was heavily used for dumping waste. Conservation efforts have been crucial in restoring and maintaining the biodiversity of this area. The sanctuary serves as a crucial carbon sink and helps in mitigating the effects of pollution in the city. Continuous efforts are underway to further improve the habitat and attract more bird species, making it a valuable asset for Kochi's environment.
