The Malik-E-Maidan Cannon was cast in 1549 by Muhammad Bin Husain Rumi, an engineer in the service of the Nizam Shahi dynasty of Ahmednagar. It was originally installed at the Ahmednagar Fort. In 1685, the cannon was seized as a trophy by the Mughal emperor Aurangzeb after his conquest of Bijapur (now Vijayapura). He had it transported to Vijayapura, where it has remained ever since. The cannon was primarily used in the defense of the city against invaders. Legend says that when fired, the sound could be heard for miles around, and elephants would be deafened. The cannon is made of bronze and weighs approximately 55 tons.
