History:

The geological history of St. Mary's Islands dates back millions of years when Madagascar was attached to India. Volcanic activity resulted in the formation of the unique basalt columns that characterize the island. These columns are believed to have formed from sub-aerial basalt lava eruptions. Over time, the waves and wind have sculpted these formations into the shapes we see today. Vasco da Gama is said to have landed on one of these islands in 1498, naming it 'El Padron de Santa Maria' as a dedication to Mother Mary, before proceeding to Calicut.
