History:
The Gommateshwara statue at Karkala was commissioned by the King Veera Pandya Deva of the Bhairarasa dynasty and consecrated in 1432 AD. The Bhairarasa dynasty were Jain rulers who controlled the region. The statue is dedicated to Bahubali, also known as Gommateshwara, a Jain saint who renounced worldly possessions to attain enlightenment. The construction of the monolithic statue required immense skill and planning, showcasing the advanced craftsmanship of the time. Over the centuries, the statue has remained a significant pilgrimage site for Jains and a symbol of peace and renunciation.
