Description:

The Shankaracharya Temple, also known as the Jyestheswara Temple, is a Hindu temple located on Shankaracharya Hill in Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir, India. Dedicated to Lord Shiva, it offers breathtaking panoramic views of the Srinagar city, Dal Lake, and the surrounding mountains. The temple's white dome is a prominent landmark visible from much of the city. Inside, you'll find a Shiva lingam and experience a serene spiritual atmosphere. The climb to the temple, either by stairs or road, is also part of the experience.

History:

The Shankaracharya Temple is believed to be one of the oldest shrines in the Kashmir Valley, with its origins dating back to around 200 BC. The present structure, however, is believed to have been constructed in the 9th century AD. It has undergone several renovations over the centuries by various rulers. The temple is associated with Adi Shankaracharya, a revered Hindu philosopher and theologian, who is said to have visited and meditated here. The hill itself was originally called Takht-e-Sulaiman (Solomon's Throne) and got its current name from Shankaracharya's visit.
