Chandanwari is a picturesque valley located about 16 km from Pahalgam, in the Anantnag district of Jammu and Kashmir, India. It is the starting point of the Amarnath Yatra, a significant Hindu pilgrimage. The valley is known for its breathtaking natural beauty, surrounded by snow-capped mountains, dense pine forests, and the Lidder River. During winter, Chandanwari becomes a hub for snow activities like sledding and skiing. The area offers stunning views and a serene environment, making it a popular destination for nature lovers and adventure enthusiasts. Even outside the pilgrimage season, Chandanwari is a worthwhile visit for its scenic charm and tranquility.
Chandanwari has historically served as a base camp for the Amarnath Yatra pilgrims. The route to the holy cave shrine of Amarnath traditionally began from Chandanwari. Before the use of helicopters and ponies became common, pilgrims would trek the challenging route from this point. The valley's name, Chandanwari, is believed to be derived from the sandalwood (chandan) paste that pilgrims traditionally carried for the yatra. While the starting point of the yatra sometimes shifts due to weather conditions, Chandanwari remains an important landmark and a popular destination in its own right.
