The Viceregal Lodge, now known as the Indian Institute of Advanced Study, is a majestic building located on Observatory Hill in Shimla. It served as the summer residence of the British Viceroy of India. The imposing Jacobethan architecture, sprawling lawns, and stunning views of the surrounding Himalayas make it a must-visit. History:
Built between 1880 and 1888, the Viceregal Lodge was designed by Henry Irwin. It witnessed several key moments in Indian history, including the Simla Conference of 1945 and the crucial discussions leading to the partition of India. Lord Dufferin, the Viceroy during its construction, envisioned a magnificent retreat away from the summer heat of the plains. After Indian independence, it briefly served as the residence of the President of India before becoming the Indian Institute of Advanced Study in 1965, a prestigious research institute for humanities and social sciences.
