History:
Kangra Fort boasts a history spanning over a thousand years, with its origins tracing back to the ancient Katoch dynasty. It is considered to be the largest fort in the Himalayas and the oldest dated fort in India. The fort witnessed numerous battles and sieges throughout its existence. Mahmud of Ghazni looted the fort in 1009. Mughal Emperor Jahangir captured it in 1620. Later, it returned to the Katoch dynasty. Maharaja Ranjit Singh of the Sikh Empire finally annexed it in the early 19th century. The fort suffered significant damage during the devastating 1905 Kangra earthquake. Despite the destruction, the fort retains its grandeur and historical significance, serving as a reminder of the region's resilience and strategic importance.
