Dudhsagar Falls, meaning "Sea of Milk", is a four-tiered waterfall located on the Mandovi River in Goa, India, on the border with Karnataka state. It is 60 km from Panaji by road and is located on the Madgaon-Belagavi rail route about 46 km east of Madgaon and 80 km south of Belagavi. Dudhsagar Falls is amongst India's tallest waterfalls with a height of 310 m (1017 feet) and an average width of 30 metres (100 feet). The falls is located in the Bhagwan Mahaveer Sanctuary and Mollem National Park amongst the Western Ghats. The area is surrounded by deciduous forests with a rich biodiversity. This waterfall is a very popular tourist attraction.
The falls are said to have been discovered by a Portuguese explorer in the 16th century. Local legends tell of a princess who bathed in a lake at the top of the falls. One day, while bathing, she noticed a prince watching her. To protect her modesty, she poured a jug of milk in front of him, creating a curtain of white. This is how the falls got their name, Dudhsagar, which means "Sea of Milk". The falls have been featured in several Bollywood films, further enhancing their popularity.
