Havelock Island, officially known as Swaraj Dweep, is a picturesque island in the Andaman and Nicobar archipelago, renowned for its pristine beaches, vibrant coral reefs, and lush tropical forests. Radhanagar Beach, often ranked among the world's best, boasts white sand and turquoise waters. Elephant Beach is another popular spot for snorkeling and diving. The island offers a range of activities, from relaxing on the beach to exploring the underwater world. Havelock provides a tranquil escape with diverse natural beauty, making it a must-visit destination in the Andamans.
Originally inhabited by indigenous tribes, Havelock Island was named after a British general, Sir Henry Havelock, during the colonial era. It played a significant role as a penal colony during British rule. Post-independence, the island saw development and became a popular tourist destination. In 2018, the Indian government renamed it Swaraj Dweep, meaning 'Freedom Island,' along with other islands in the archipelago, to commemorate 75 years of India's independence. Despite the official name change, it is still widely referred to as Havelock Island.
