The city developed rapidly under British rule, with the establishment of schools, hospitals, and administrative buildings. After India's independence in 1947, Shillong remained the capital of Assam until Meghalaya was carved out as a separate state in 1972. Shillong then became the capital of Meghalaya. The city has witnessed significant growth and development over the years, while still retaining its colonial charm and natural beauty.
